The cooperative Claudio Chamorro No. 2 is formed
by 19 associates (men and women), and has a population
of over 120 people. It is located in the area of
Charco Muerto, on the edge of Lake Cocibolca, 25
kilometers from the entrance of Monteverde (km 60 ½ on
the highway between Granada and Nandaime).
The members of this cooperative all have their origins
in the area; many of them are former workers of large
estates who decided to organize themselves as a cooperative
that was made beneficial by the Agrarian Reform.
That is how they
obtained
the property rights of the collective lands.
This cooperative is dedicated to the traditional
activities of fishing, agriculture (“chagüite” =
plantain, basic grains…) and to the raising
of cattle. The collective cattle of the UCA is kept
in enclosures, thanks to an agreement of payment
by pasture.
The associates are planning on incorporating new
economic activities such as the production of honey,
and communal rural tourism.
