The cooperative Heroes and Martyrs of Nandaime is
located in the area of La Granadilla, around 3 kilometers
from the entrance of Monteverde (km 60 ½ on
the highway between Granada and Nandaime). It is
one of the foundational cooperatives of the UCA.
The 23 affiliated families have done over 20 years
of organized work; from 1984 to now. Many of its
members used to be workers on big estates. The total
population exceeds 150 people.
The cooperative is traditionally dedicated to the
sowing of beans and other basic grains, combined
with other consumable products, such as “chagüite” (=
plantain), cassava, fruits… and the breeding
of small livestock. Since the year 2000, the cooperative
has also worked on communal rural tourism.
