The cooperative “Nicaragua Libre” is
located in the district of Monteverde, a mere 500
meters from the entrance of Monteverde (km 60 ½ on
the highway between Granada and Nandaime). It has
12 associates, and a total population of 35 people.
The social structure of this cooperative is characterized
by a combination of families that are exclusively
dedicated to farming and other that make work in
the countryside compatible with salaried jobs (a
teacher, a bricklayer, a carpenter, a guard…).
The cooperative has been part of the Program of Communal
Rural Tourism since 2002. Besides activities that
are directly related to tourism (accommodation, food,
roads…), crafts made by groups of young people
out of natural seeds are offered, and organic coffee
is for sale.
